Q: What is the difference between a psychotherapist and a psychologist?
A: A psychologist studies the science of the mind and observes different phases of the human condition and mental disorders. Not all psychologists provide therapy services.
Q: What is the difference between a psychotherapist and a psychiatrist?
A: Psychotherapists are essentially teachers/educators. They possess the same or varying degrees of the same knowledge of a psychologist, but have a more intense focus on communicating ways to deal with mental health disorders.
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who studies the chemical aspects of the mind/brain. Some may provide therapy, but mostly focus on evaluations, assessments, and medication management, unlike a psychotherapist or counselor.
Counselors and psychotherapists are very similar, however a psychotherapist might be more intense than a counselor. To practice as a psychotherapist in the state of New York and to be on the insurance panels one must possess State Licensure. In the State of New York this would be a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW-R).
